School spies of students via webcam?

The school district near Philadelphia accused of turning on webcams in student issued computers is getting a lot more press recently.

Blake Robbins filed a lawsuit against Lower Merion School District near Philadelphia, alleging that the school district activated the webcam in the student's school-issued MacBook to photograph him in his own home.

The school district claimed they had a picture of the student doing drugs. The student says it was candy. Nonetheless, there are some majjor privacy concerns here.

If you have a school issued computer I suggest you put some electrical tape over your webcam if you suspect it may be accessed remotely.

It seems you can now skype webcam chat in 720p High Def. The only problem is it doesn't seem like you have many options for a low lost high def webcam right now. As far as I know, the only solutions to date are high def video camers over a firewire link. Luckily, at CES they did introduce some low cost 720p webcams starting at $69 that are due out next month. Keep an eye out for the FaceVision's FV Touchcam N1.

At least that's the case according to this sexting article by the examiner. According to the article, which states that nearly 30% of 14-24 years olds surveyed have been involved with some type of “sexting" the definition of said act is as follows:

"texting with sexual references or words, sharing nude photos or videos, or participating in sexual acts via a webcam."

Why is it that reporters always feel they have to add extra acts to a definition in order to make surveys look better. I'm further conserned that the survey includes both under age and legally concenting adults. How about we break this down a little further before spreading these numbers to worried parents on the internet?

Microsoft is going to be coming out with the NX-6000 which is a 2.0 MP webcam in November for $100. I suspect this is designed to go head to head with the QuickCam ultra Vision from Logitech expected to be available soon for $130. So, the question is - which will be better - 1.3MP with glass optics or 2.0 MP with plastic optics?

According to digital-lifestyles, Logitech is going to be coming out with a webcam in August that is going to blow away current models.
The new QuickCam Ultra Vision will have double the resolution of the 5000 series cam, feature far superior optics, and a sensor capable of operating at much lower light levels.
I am optimistic this will be a cheaper alternative to DV cameras connected by firewire.

If you do webcam shows and want to protect yourself from people recording and distributing your content you need this software from digital peers. Simply use the software to place all the information about the person purchasing the show on a scrolling line at the bottom of your cam feed as well as information stating that recording/distrubtion is prohibited. Most likely this will be enough deternt to stop anyone from distributing your content because they would risk their personal details being release on the internet. Worst case, if your feed ever does show up someplace else you have the ability to go after the purchaser of the show legally.

I recommend the PVR series video capture cards (150, 250, or 350) from Hauppauge to use older video cameras along with Yahoo and MSN. I have used many brands of video capture cards over the years and have found the PVR series from Hauppauge to be the best analog card for the money on the market. Using an analog camera along with one of those cards will result in video nearly as good as a digital connection using firewire and the PVR series cards are direclty recoginized by yahoo as webcam devices.
